Guatemala Living Maya of the Highlands
Day One Antigua, Guatemala
Arrive Guatemala to be met and transferred to Antigua and the tranquility of the green Ponchoy Valley. Following check in, you will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore this former Spanish colonial capital of Central America. Overnight Hotel Posada Don Rodrigo near Antigua's central park.
Day Two Chichicastenango and Guatemala's Most Colorful Indian Marketplace
Morning scenic drive through the mountains to Chichicastenango to visit one of the most spectacular markets in the Americas. When you hit the streets in Chichi, be ready to bargain. For the vendors, the market started yesterday, as they came from villages throughout the region to prepare for today's market. Evening transfer to the town of Panajachel on Lake Atitlan. Overnight Posada de Don Rodrigo in Panajachel. (B.)
Day Three Lake Atitlan's Maya Villages
Today you will explore Mayan communities surrounding the lake with your guide. Several traditional farming villages are set along the Lake's shore to take advantage of its Xocomil, or "wind that carries away sin." Points of interest in the area include the quiet village of San Antonio Palop¢, and the market of Solol , one of the major centers for trade of the western highlands. Dressed in traditional garb, street vendors in Solol come from throughout the area to sell everything from fruits and vegetables to the area's characteristically brightly colored woven goods. In the evening return to your hotel where you may witness the sunset that inspired the Mayas to consider Atitlan basin "the navel of the earth and sky." Afternoon transfer to Antigua, visiting Iximche Archaeological Site on the way. Overnight at Posada de Don Rodrigo in Antigua. (B.)
Day Four Antigua
Established by Spanish conquistadors in 1524, Antigua was Guatemala's capital city for over two centuries. Antigua enchants visitors with its narrow cobblestone streets, tree-shaded parks, and old colonial architecture. In the morning you will enjoy a city tour that includes palaces, churches, convents & plazas. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight at the Posada de Don Rodrigo in Antigua. (B.)
Day Five Depature
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight, or continue your travels.
